San Pablo Creek is our hidden treasure. Imagine strolling along a path listening to the babbling of the brook as you walk around town to do your errands or head to BART. The riparian canopy provides cool shade in summer where children look for crawdads and frogs or small mammal footprints. Envision benches where people can take a break or bring a picnic and perhaps a creekside café. While you’re at it, envision the businesses turning around to the face the creek and the path you are walking on...
Friends of Orinda Creeks completed Phase I of the Downtown San Pablo Creek Restoration Project in fall 2022. The cost of this phase was approximately $130,000 which included full hydraulic modeling to maximize flood protection and obtain agency approval of the project, design, permits, removal of the dilapidated concrete channel, replacement with boulder step weirs that fish are capable of migrating over, and replanting the banks with native riparian species. We were able pay for this project using donations from private citizens, local organizations such as the Orinda Parks Foundation and Gateway Alliance, as well as a grant from the Contra Costa Fish and Wildlife Committee. A sincere thank you to everyone who helped achieve this first phase!
Our next step is to finish the 30% design plan for the larger restoration project so
that we can apply for state restoration funds. Your tax deductible donations are critical to this next phase of the restoration.
